In the beginning

Organização para Produção e Democratização de Informação Canto Cidadão (which literally means: “Organization for the Production and Democratization of Information Pertaining to the Citizen’s Corner”) was founded in São Paulo, on July 7, 2002, according to OSCIP’s law, (Law 9,790/99, art.3º). Radio broadcasters Felipe Mello and Roberto Ravagnani perceived the necessity and value of giving airtime to issues facing the non-profit sector and pertaining to citizens’ rights in order to reach large numbers of people. In general it was their perception that these issues were being handled superficially by the media, and without deeper discussion to provoke people to action. They decided to create their own initiatives. Canto Cidadão focuses on these pertinent issues, with impartiality and objectivity, giving them the broad scope and significance they deserve. Canto Cidadão was born to provoke! With greater awareness comes the intention to act and its consequences. The organization creates events to generate greater public sensibility (lectures, radio programs, print media, tv programs) and foments direct volunteer action (hospital clowns, theater in hospitals and schools, and various conscience raising campaigns) so as to invite more and more people into this process.

Our Mission

Canto Cidadão produces and broadcasts multimedia content toward creating conscientious and active citizenship, in all its aspects. Additionally we aim to encourage civil society’s active and organized participation in not-for-profit development, creating and contributing to a balanced society.

Canto Cidadão emphasizes forms of volunteering to disseminate ethics, peace, citizenship, human rights, democracy, and other universal values. Canto Cidadão promotes research in alternative technologies to help develop means of publically broadcasting information, and scientific and technical knowledge, related to the practice of volunteering and the practice of citizenship. (Law 9,790/99, art.3º)
